In a strategic mission to expand healthcare education in Kwara south, Thomas Adewumi University (TAU) marked a significant milestone in its educational journey with a formal report presentation by the Programme Implementation Committee (PIC) on the development of its MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) and D. Pharm (Doctor of Pharmacy) programs, bringing the institution closer to welcoming its first set of medical students.
In her welcome remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Francisca Oladipo highlighted TAU’s commitment to academic expansion, noting, “When I assumed office in 2022, I outlined a five-year strategic plan to establish transformative faculties that would drive our mission forward, including law and medicine. After securing NUC approval for our law faculty, the next major focus became the MBBS programme, and with the support of Professor Kuranga and other incredible experts, we’re getting closer to realizing that vision.”
Following her address, the institution’s Chancellor, Engineer Dr. Johnson Adewumi, expressed gratitude to the committee, recognizing the depth of expertise assembled for the university’s ambitious goals. “To see so many esteemed professors dedicate themselves to this vision is humbling,” he said. “Your support is not just for TAU, but for future generations who will benefit from this progress in healthcare education. This is a partnership built on purpose, and with God’s guidance, we will build something of lasting value together.”
Presenting the committee’s progress report, the PIC chairman, Professor Ayotunde B. Omotoso, provided an overview of the committee’s efforts and the strategic partnerships required to launch the medical programmes successfully. “We will propose a formal MOU with the Kwara State Government, designating the General Hospital in Omu-Aran as a teaching hospital. With targeted upgrades, this facility would enable TAU to offer comprehensive training while also enhancing healthcare access for Kwara South,” he explained.
Other members of the Planning and Implementation Committee include notable personalities such as the former CMD of the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Professor Sulyman Kuranga; Professor Samuel Agaja; Professor Oladimeji Bolarinwa; Professor Feyi Adepoju; and several others from diverse medical and pharmaceutical disciplines, with additional attendance from members of the University Management.
