In a unique and enlightening experience, students from the Faculty of Law at Thomas Adewumi University embarked on a cultural and educational journey as they visited the royal palace of her host community; Oko. The visit, which included a courtesy meeting with the King and the rare opportunity to witness customary dispute resolution proceedings, showcased the University's commitment to providing a well-rounded legal education.
The students, accompanied by faculty members, were warmly received by His Royal Highness, the Oloko of Oko Irese, Oba Victor Oluwafemi Olawuyi, in a gesture that symbolized the harmonious blend of tradition and modernity. The King expressed his delight in welcoming the young legal minds to his palace and praised the University's initiative in exposing students to the intricacies of customary law. The highlight of the visit was the students' involvement in witnessing live customary dispute resolution proceedings. The King's court, adorned with symbolic artifacts and steeped in local history, served as the backdrop for this rare educational opportunity. Students observed the proceedings as customary cases were deliberated upon and resolved in accordance with traditional practices and norms.
Barr. Hope Okedele, a lecturer in the faculty, emphasized the importance of such experiences in legal education. "Exposure to customary law and alternative dispute resolution mechanisms is invaluable for our students. It allows them to appreciate the diverse legal landscape of our country and understand how legal principles are applied in various contexts." The king also provided insights into the historical significance of the palace and its role in preserving the region's traditions. The students shared their reflections on the visit, "It was an eye-opening experience. Witnessing the customary dispute resolution process firsthand made them realize the importance of cultural sensitivity in legal practice. Our textbooks teach us the law, but experiences like this teach us the people." They concluded.
