Thomas Adewumi University marked another historic stride in its pursuit of global excellence with the commissioning of the Centre for Foreign Languages and the TAU Internet Radio, as part of activities lined up for the University’s 2nd Convocation Ceremony. The event, held at the West Campus, brought together principal officers and distinguished members of the University community.
Present at the commissioning were the Chancellor and Founder, Engr. Dr. Johnson O. Adewumi; the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Francisca Oladipo; members of the Governing Council, Engr. Babatunde Adewumi and Mr. Oluwatobi Adewumi; the Registrar, Mr. Kolawole Fisoye; as well as faculty, and staff members.
The ceremony began with the unveiling of the Centre for Foreign Languages, a visionary initiative aimed at equipping all TAU students with proficiency in four United Nations languages: Japanese, French, Chinese, and Arabic. The centre will support the University's new requirement that every graduate must demonstrate fluency in four international languages, a move designed to build globally competitive scholars.
In his remarks, the Chancellor/Founder, Engr. Dr. Johnson Adewumi, commended the Vice-Chancellor for championing the establishment of the Centre. He expressed immense delight at the introduction of the four UN languages, describing the initiative as “a golden opportunity for TAU students and staff to distinguish themselves globally.” He stated that the centre would make TAU graduates exceptional and better positioned for international relevance. He thereafter commissioned the Centre in God’s name and for the good of humanity.
The Director of the Centre and Head of the Department of English & Literary Studies, Mr. Adelokun Adetunji, gave an insightful exposition on the Centre’s structure and academic offerings. He explained that the Centre is designed for beginners, continuing learners, and candidates preparing for international certifications. Learners will be taught the foundations of grammar and vocabulary across the four language skills; listening, speaking, reading, and writing, while engaging in practical everyday conversations.
He further noted that the diploma programme will offer more advanced studies with deeper linguistic exploration, alongside opportunities for professional examinations. The Centre also plans to introduce Spanish soon and extend its services to children, NGOs, embassies, and other specialized professional groups. Selected students later demonstrated their speaking abilities in Arabic, French, and Chinese, showcasing the Centre’s potential.
Similarly, the TAU Internet Radio was officially launched. The Head of the Department of Mass Communication, Mr. Ibrahim Ibukun, introduced the platform to the audience, describing it as an innovative tool for digital learning, campus engagement, and global communication.
Declaring the platform open, the Chancellor expressed excitement about the opportunities the radio would bring, noting that it will be use to boradcast the University to the world, it will also positions TAU students to compete effectively in the evolving media landscape. A live demonstration followed immediately, during which the Founder, the Vice-Chancellor, and Engr. Babatunde Adewumi were interviewed on-air, marking the Radio’s first official broadcast.
The commissioning of both facilities underscores Thomas Adewumi University’s unwavering commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and global relevance. With these new centres, TAU continues to create an environment where students gain world-class skills, broaden their global perspectives, and are fully prepared for the demands of a rapidly changing world.
