In furtherance of its commitment to community development and public health awareness, the Department of Biological Sciences at Thomas Adewumi University organized a health outreach programme themed “Better Health Begins with Knowledge: Hygiene, Nutrition, and You,” the initiative was designed to enlighten secondary school students on critical health issues such as hygiene, food poisoning, and protein malnutrition.
The programme began with a welcome address by Ms. Princess Adaji, a lecturer in the department, who appreciated the university’s drive to integrate classroom learning with community engagement. She encouraged the students to maximize the opportunity to learn and apply the health knowledge in their daily lives.
The outreach featured interactive teaching sessions, the use of visual learning aids including educational charts and cardboard presentations, and a short video to reinforce key concepts. These tools helped communicate vital information in a relatable and accessible manner.
To foster engagement, hand sanitizers were awarded to students who answered questions correctly, a move that not only encouraged participation but also promoted hygiene practices. The event concluded with the distribution of biscuits and drinks to all students as a token of appreciation.
The school’s management, represented by staff members, expressed sincere appreciation and commended the department for addressing vital topics that affect the health and academic performance of students. They encouraged the team to return in the future for more health-related programs.
This outreach underscores TAU’s mission of using science as a tool for societal transformation. The Department of Biological Sciences continues to set the pace in applying academic knowledge to real-world challenges, furthering the university’s vision of nurturing socially responsible and health-conscious students.
