In a bid to give back to Oko-Irese community and promote health awareness among young girls, the Department of Mass Communication, Thomas Adewumi University, held a female sensitization programme at Oko Comprehensive High School themed “Know Your Body, Own Your Health.”
The outreach, which took place on Friday, 27th June 2025, was a student-led initiative focused on educating and empowering female secondary school students on essential health and hygiene practices. The entire department, including students and staff actively participated in the programme, highlighting the department's strong commitment to social responsibility and community development.
The sensitization programme aimed to bridge the information gap surrounding menstrual hygiene and female reproductive health, particularly among adolescent girls. During the interactive session, the TAU team provided vital information on menstrual health management, including how to track menstrual cycles, maintain proper hygiene during menstruation, and foster body confidence and self-care.
One of the key highlights of the event was the practical demonstration on the proper use of sanitary pads, followed by the distribution of free sanitary products to the senior students of the school. The team also emphasized the importance of clean personal habits and open conversations around female health, aiming to break long-standing taboos and myths associated with menstruation.
Speaking at the event, one of the TAU representatives expressed the importance of early health education for young girls. “We believe knowledge is power. When young girls understand their bodies and their health, they are better equipped to make informed decisions, care for themselves, and grow with confidence,” she said.
Teachers of Oko Comprehensive High School also expressed appreciation for the programme, describing it as timely, impactful, and the first of its kind in the history of the school. The event not only educated students but also engaged teachers, providing them the room to continue the conversation in their classrooms.
The initiative reflects Thomas Adewumi University’s broader mission to foster student-led social impact, health awareness, and gender inclusion in underserved communities. It stands as a testament to the university’s commitment to building a generation of socially responsible and empathetic communicators.
