The need for strategic collaboration among researchers was brought to the fore at Thomas Adewumi University as the Dean Postgraduate School, an Associate Professor, and the HoD of Sociology department, Dr. Dele Rasak, called for the formation of research clusters at the institution anchored on global development goals and guided by SMART principles.
This statement was made while delivering a seminar titled “Why and How to Form a Research Cluster in TAU,” organized by the Faculty of Management and Social Sciences on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, at the Yusuf Ali Lecture Theatre, and attended by final-year students and staff of the faculty.
According to Dr. Rasak, forming a research cluster using the framework of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) would enhance TAU’s visibility, attract funding, encourage interdisciplinary collaboration, and foster innovation. “A cluster guided by SMART goals and epistemological models will position TAU as a hub for sustainable development and academic excellence,” he said.
Speaking on research structure, he emphasized the importance of setting Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-bound objectives in research, especially for students and early-career academics. He also highlighted the relevance of aligning institutional research themes with pressing global issues to boost impact and policy relevance.
Additionally, he outlined key steps for establishing a research cluster within the university, including institutional alignment, identifying SDG-aligned themes, recruiting across disciplines, securing funding, and sustaining long-term engagement.
Ultimately, this seminar underscores TAU’s ongoing commitment to promoting a nurturing a research-driven academic culture that empowers scholars and addresses global challenges through proactive collaboration aligned with global research standards.
