On Tuesday, December 13, 2024, Thomas Adewumi University (TAU) hosted the accreditation team from the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) in the University's Senate Chamber for a crucial evaluation of its Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) programme, marking a significant milestone in the university’s pursuit of excellence in medical education.
Following a brief introductory session, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Francisca Oladipo, warmly welcomed the MLSCN team, noting that the visit marked the university’s first council accreditation for the MLS programme. With reference to the council’s approval of the Programme in 2021, she further highlighted the university’s commitment to developing future professionals, stating, “This accreditation exercise is an invaluable learning opportunity for us. We view the MLS department as a seedling that needs nurturing, and we ask the MLSCN team to offer their mentorship and guidance as we continue to grow and strengthen the programme.”
In response, the team lead from Afe Babalola University, Prof. Bernard Oluwapelumi Oluboyo, highlighted the critical role of the accreditation process in ensuring compliance with national standards. He explained that the evaluation would focus on human and material resources, the university’s teaching hospital facilities, and other components critical to the programme’s success, stating, “This programme directly impacts human lives, and it is essential that we uphold the highest standards.”
Following the session, the MLSCN team carried out a comprehensive evaluation of the MLS programme, thoroughly inspecting laboratory facilities, library and lecture halls, staff qualifications, and teaching hospital processes, while also engaging with students and staff to assess the overall learning environment. At the end of their assignment, they presented a preliminary report detailing their observations, advice, and recommendations aimed at strengthening the programme.
Other representatives of the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria at the accreditation exercise include notable personalities such as Prof. Olusoga Ogbolu, Mr. Ogbonna Idume, Mrs. Adesua, Prof. Oluboyo, with additional attendance from members of the University Management.
TAU eagerly awaits the final report from the MLSCN, optimistic that the accreditation process will yield a favorable result. This milestone reinforces the university’s ongoing commitment to academic excellence and its mission in contributing to the development of skilled medical professionals.
