On November 26, 2024, Thomas Adewumi University (TAU) made history with its Maiden Convocation Ceremony, celebrating the graduation of 26 students and emphasizing the critical role of STEM-driven innovation in building a globally competitive and self-reliant nation.
In his keynote address, the Executive Governor of Oyo State, His Excellency, Engr. Oluwaseyi Abiodun Makinde, ably represented by his Chief of Staff, Otunba Segun Ogunwuyi, emphasized the transformative power of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) in addressing Nigeria's challenges. “The real power of STEM lies not in using technology but in creating, innovating, and adapting it to solve local challenges,” he stated, urging graduates to become solution-driven innovators. “The future belongs to those who dare to challenge the status quo, innovate, and create transformative solutions,” he added.
Similarly, the High Commissioner of Namibia to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Humphrey D. Geiseb, lauded the resilience of the graduating class and their readiness to tackle global challenges. "You are not just graduates; you are the future leaders, innovators, and change-makers who will shape our societies. Your education transcends borders, empowering you to make meaningful contributions locally and globally," he remarked. He further emphasized the need for cross-border educational collaborations, advocating for exchange programs and joint research initiatives between Nigeria and Namibia.
Delivering the convocation address, the Chancellor of the institution, Dr (Engr.) Johnson Bamidele Adewumi, expressed pride in the institution’s inaugural graduating class and reflected on the vision behind the institution's establishment. "Thomas Adewumi University is not merely producing graduates but equipping problem-solvers prepared to tackle the complexities of the modern world,” he affirmed. He further urged the graduands to uphold the university's values of integrity and excellence as they step into the next phase of their lives.
On a similar note, the Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Professor Francisca Oladipo, celebrated the achievements of the 26 graduates, which included Six First Class, 14 Second Class Upper, Four Second Class Lower, and One Third Class degrees. She proudly noted, “Our graduates are not just academically outstanding but also possess international ICT certifications, making them ready for the demands of a technology-driven world.” She reiterated the university's dedication to interdisciplinary learning and global competitiveness, stating that TAU’s contributions to the workforce reflect its mission to redefine education in Nigeria.
Further reinforcing the importance of education, the Governor of Kwara State, Mallam Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, ably represented by the Deputy Governor, Mr Kayode Alabi, emphasized that education in STEM fields is crucial for addressing national challenges and competing globally. “TAU exemplifies the vision of nurturing excellence through a culture of innovation and critical thinking,” he remarked, as he congratulated the graduates on their achievements and wished them success in their future endeavors.
In a heartfelt royal blessing, His Royal Highness, Oloko of Oko-Irese, advised the graduates to focus on becoming job creators rather than job seekers. He urged them to manage their time wisely and maintain good academic and moral conduct, adding, “Be good ambassadors of this school and your families, and we believe you will rise to great heights in your careers.”
The event also included several notable infrastructural developments, with key figures laying the foundation for the future of the university. The Executive Governor of Kwara State's representative, Deputy Governor Kayode Alabi, laid the foundation for the College of Medical and Health Sciences, while the Governor of Oyo State's representative, Otunba Segun Ogunwuyi, commissioned the new hostel facility. The Namibian Ambassador to Nigeria, Humphrey D. Geiseb, laid the foundation for another hostel building, marking significant progress in the expansion of the university.
The ceremony was further graced by members of the Governing Council, Principal Officers, Senate members, Board of Trustees, and the Management Board of the university. It also attracted Vice-Chancellors of several universities, Rectors of Polytechnics, Provosts of Colleges of Education, Registrars from partner institutions, Royal Fathers, parents, guardians, staff, and students, all of whom contributed to the success of this historic occasion.
