In a dynamic display of collaboration and visionary planning, the National Physiotherapy Student Executives from the University of Ilorin embarked on a pivotal visit to Thomas Adewumi University (TAU) last week. This landmark meeting convened at the esteemed office of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Francisca Oladipo, served as the nexus for fostering innovative partnerships in the realm of Physiotherapy education and community engagement.
Gathered at this momentous meeting were key stakeholders, including members of the University management team, the Dean of the Basic Medical and Health Sciences Faculty, Professor E.O Irokanulo, and Dr. Saliu Akinwale, Head of the Physiotherapy Department, among others. Notable attendees from the National Physiotherapy Student Executives included Mr. Obadun Shola, the National President, Miss Adeyemi Adejuoro, the General Secretary, Mr. Ayodele Fogofoluwa, President of the Physiotherapy Association Unilorin chapter, and other executives of the body. Also in attendance were the executives from TAU's own Physiotherapy student body.
During the deliberations, Mr. Shola, the National President, expressed gratitude to Prof. Francisca for her unwavering support towards TAU's Physiotherapy students, acknowledging the conducive learning environment provided both on-campus and during clinical rotations. He lauded the picturesque surroundings of TAU and swiftly transitioned to the primary agenda of their visit.
Hosting the National Convention in Kwara State
A centerpiece of their proposal was the hosting of the National Convention in Kwara State, slated for August 2024. Recognizing the singular role of TAU and the University of Ilorin as the only institutions offering Physiotherapy education in Kwara State, the executives sought collaborative efforts with TAU to ensure the success of this landmark event.
Medical Outreach
In a gesture of altruism and community empowerment, the National Physiotherapy Student Executives articulated plans for a Medical Health Outreach at Oko Medical Centre. This initiative aims to provide essential healthcare services to the community while fostering cross-institutional collaboration and promoting the beauty of the Oko community.
Sports Festival
Another highlight of the discussion centered on the proposal to name a sports festival after TAU's esteemed founder and Chancellor, Engr. Dr. Johnson Adewumi. This initiative not only celebrates the University's rich heritage but also underscores its commitment to holistic student development.
In response, Prof. Francisca Oladipo extended a warm welcome to the visiting executives, commending them for their dedication to the welfare of Physiotherapy students. She emphasized the symbiotic relationship between TAU and the University of Ilorin, highlighting the latter's role as a mentor institution. Moreover, she announced plans for international collaboration with the American Physical Therapy Association, providing students with invaluable opportunities for mentorship and global engagement.
Expressing her support for the proposed initiatives, the Vice-Chancellor affirmed TAU's commitment to community engagement and encouraged ongoing mentorship and support for junior colleagues within the department. She pledged the University's assistance in facilitating the success of the Medical Health Outreach and reiterated TAU's role as a beacon of hope within the community.
In a poignant moment, the Association of Physiotherapy Students President at TAU, Miss. Shuaib Simbiat expressed heartfelt appreciation for the Vice-Chancellor's hospitality and underscored the transformative impact of the proposed collaborations.
As the meeting drew to a close, Prof. E.O Irokanulo, Dean of the Faculty of Basic Medical and Health Sciences, commended the National Physiotherapy Student Executives for their forward-thinking approach and urged them to continue striving for excellence in their endeavors. A guided tour of TAU's facilities and an interactive session with the 100 & 200- level students capped off the insightful visit.
