In a significant stride toward its commitment to fostering innovation and contributing to the global effort to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) or Global Goals (United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) policy guideline, 2016- 2030 to end poverty, protect the environment and ensuring that all people enjoy peace and prosperity now and, in the future). DRIPDEV holds Thomas Adewumi University Research Hub (TAURH) (A Special Monthly Research Capacity Building Lecture Series for all TAU Academic Staff) September, 2023 Edition titled "TAU and her drive towards achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)". The enlightening event saw the active participation of the University's esteemed academic staff, scholars and the Vice-Chancellor of the Institution, Professor Francisca Oladipo. This initiative showcases the university's dedication to research and its pivotal role in shaping a sustainable future.
In the Vice-Chancellor’s remark at the event, she described Research and Development as the major driving force behind many societal transformations. She mentioned some innovative projects being carried out at Thomas Adewumi University Skill Development Unit. While speaking to the academic staff in attendance, she admonished them to be critical thinkers, and carry out multidisciplinary research. She also enjoined every member of staff to be opened to collaborative research which will set TAU on Global visibility.
The program was a reflection of Thomas Adewumi University's unwavering dedication to addressing the global challenges outlined in the United Nations' 17 SDGs. These goals encompass a broad spectrum of global issues, ranging from eradicating poverty and ensuring quality education to promoting gender equality and combating climate change. Dr. Adekemi T. Dahunsi, Director, DRIPDEV, who spearheaded this insightful gathering, emphasized the vital roles universities must play in achieving the SDGs. She noted, "Universities are not just centers of learning but also hubs of innovative research", she also stated, "We have a unique responsibility to drive sustainable development through our academic pursuits, research endeavors, and community engagements i.e., letting our impact be felt in our immediate community, nationwide and globally". She also admonished the staff to start thinking globally and acting locally to solving the problems in their immediate environment.
The program covered all the 17 SDGs including; No Poverty, Zero Hunger, Good Health and Well-being, Quality Education, Clean water and Sanitation, Affordable and Clean Energy, decent Work and Economic growth, Industry, Innovation and Structure, Reduced Inequalities, Sustainable Cities, Responsible Consumption and Production, Climate Action, Life below Water, Life on land, Peace, Justice and Strong institutions and Partnerships for the Global Goals. The participants were enlightened on the ways in which their individual research and teaching skills could further these global goals and create a positive impact on the society. DRIPDEV reaffirmed its commitment to supporting faculty members in their pursuit of research that aligns with the SDGs. Dr. Dahunsi encouraged multidisciplinary collaborations and partnerships, emphasizing that collective efforts are essential for making meaningful progress toward achieving the SDGs.
As Thomas Adewumi University continues to nurture a culture of innovation and research excellence, the TAU Research Hub's program on SDGs serves as a testament to the University's dedication to creating a sustainable and prosperous future for all. This event not only showcased the intellectual prowess of TAU's academic staff but also highlighted the University's determination to contribute to the achievement of the SDGs on both local and global scale. It is a clear demonstration of how higher education institutions can be catalysts for positive change in our world.
