In a bid to address the growing concerns of Moral Decadence and Social Vices among students, Professor M.S. Audu, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), Federal University Lokoja, delivered a thought-provoking speech titled "Towards Saving Students of Thomas Adewumi University from Moral Decadence and Social Vices" during the 3rd Matriculation ceremony held at the University Auditorium on Saturday, July 8th, 2023.
Professor M.S. Audu commenced his address by commending the university's administration, faculty, and students for their unwavering dedication to academic excellence. However, he emphasized the need to address the alarming rise in moral decadence and social vices among students, which pose significant threats to their personal growth and the overall reputation of the institution. Delivering his address with eloquence and conviction, he emphasized the importance of nurturing a morally upright and responsible student body. He expressed his concern over the increasing prevalence of social vices and their adverse effects on the individual, educational institutions, and society as a whole. Drawing from his vast experience in academia, Prof. M.S. Audu shed light on the root causes of moral decadence among students and proposed strategies to counteract them.
The Professor of History and International Studies gave a brief definition of the key terms in his speech; Morality, Decadence, and Moral decadence. He explained types of Moral Decadence listing out the common social vices and moral decadence in our society today: Indecency Dressing among youths, Examination Malpractices in Universities, Cultism, Drug Abuse and Alcoholism, Terrorism/Violence, Cyber Crime, Sexual Prostitution/Promiscuity and their consequences. He stated that “TAU was established to train students morally, socially, intellectually, culturally and for skills acquisition required for knowledge in driving the economy of Nigeria. TAU’s motto, when knowledge speaks, wisdom listens, Scientia Sermo, Sapienta Audio, is carefully and intentionally crafted to produce responsible and useful citizens that will help in transforming the society in which you will find yourself after graduation”. He further said, “The motto means that wisdom is anchored on sound knowledge that is acquired through resilience, perseverance, and commitment to scholarship”.
During his speech, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics) emphasized the importance of creating a conducive environment that fosters positive values and ethics. He stressed that the responsibility to curb moral decadence and social vices lies not only with the university administration but also with the students themselves. Professor M.S. Audu encouraged students to take ownership of their actions and embrace a culture of accountability and responsibility. Furthermore, he urged students to cultivate a strong sense of personal discipline and self-awareness. He encouraged them to stay away from negative peer pressure and engage in activities that promote personal and social growth. He emphasized the importance of making informed choices, being mindful of the consequences of their actions, and actively contributing to the betterment of society.
In his closing remarks, Professor M.S. Audu expressed his confidence in the ability of the students to rise above the challenges and become exemplary leaders of tomorrow. He urged them to seize the opportunities presented by their university education and make a positive impact in their chosen fields while upholding the values of integrity, respect, and social responsibility. Overall, the 3rd Matriculation ceremony was not only a celebration of new beginnings but also a call to action for all stakeholders in the university community to foster an environment that nurtures and develops responsible and morally upright individuals.
