Thomas Adewumi University (TAU), Oko-Irese, Kwara State, officially inaugurated the Thomas Adewumi University Theatre Troupe and Cultural Centre on Wednesday, 20 May 2026, in a colourful ceremony held at the University Auditorium.

The landmark event marked the formal unveiling of a new platform dedicated to creativity, cultural expression, and talent development within the university community.

The inauguration was graced by the esteemed presence of the Founder and Chancellor of the University, Engr. Dr. Johnson ADEWUMI, alongside the Co-Founder, Dr. Mrs. Gloria ADEWUMI. Also in attendance were His Royal Highness, Oba Oluwafemi OLAWUYI, the Oloko of Oko-Irese, accompanied by members of the Oloko-in-Council. The ceremony also welcomed principal officers of the University, including the Dean of the Faculty of Basic Medical and Health Sciences, Prof. Emenike IROKANULO, who represented the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Francisca O. OLADIPO, the Registrar, Mr. Fisoye O. KOLAWOLE, the Bursar, Mrs. Rachael O. AFOLABI, members of staff, and students.

Delivering the opening remarks, the Head of the Department of Languages and Coordinator of the Theatre Troupe and Cultural Centre, Mr. Adetunji O. ADELOKUN, welcomed guests and dignitaries to the historic occasion. He explained that the initiative was conceived as part of efforts by the Department of Languages to enrich student life and create opportunities for artistic and cultural engagement within the university.

According to him, the troupe was established in September/October 2025 and quickly made its mark through the staging of the university’s convocation play, which received widespread commendation.

“The Department of Languages decided that we wanted to improve the social life of students at Thomas Adewumi University, and that vision gave birth to this troupe,” he said. “Following the success of the convocation play, the Chancellor saw the quality and depth of what the students presented and supported the formal inauguration of the troupe and cultural centre.”

Mr. Adelokun also acknowledged the dedication, sacrifice, and commitment of the students who worked tirelessly to bring the vision to life, before ushering in the performances for the day.

Representing the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Emenike Irokanulo, Dean of the Faculty of Basic Medical and Health Sciences, delivered the Vice-Chancellor’s remarks, commending the students and organisers for the initiative. He expressed confidence in the future of the troupe and its role in advancing the university’s cultural and creative vision.

He encouraged students to remain focused on the primary purpose of their university journey while pursuing their creative passions.

“This troupe will be well managed, and I believe it will not disappoint God, the community, society, or Thomas Adewumi University,” he said. As you express your talents, remember the core reason you are here in TAU. Let your academic purpose remain paramount while your gifts continue to shine beyond the borders of the university for the right reasons.”

The high point of the ceremony was the official inauguration by the Founder and Chancellor, Engr. Dr. Johnson Adewumi, who formally declared the Theatre Troupe and Cultural Centre open.

In a symbolic moment, the Chancellor struck the ceremonial gong three times. He explained that the first strike represented excellence, the second symbolised the showcase of culture, while the third signified yet another milestone achievement by Thomas Adewumi University. “It is my pleasure to officially inaugurate the Thomas Adewumi University Theatre Troupe and Cultural Centre,” he declared, drawing applause from the audience.

Following the inauguration, guests were treated to a theatrical performance titled The Moxie of Akiti-Oko, a stage production that tells the story of the origin of Oko-Irese. The play captivated the audience with its storytelling, cultural depth, and artistic interpretation of local history.

The inauguration of the Theatre Troupe and Cultural Centre signifies another important step in Thomas Adewumi University’s commitment to holistic education, one that combines academic excellence with creativity, cultural preservation, and student development.

The event served as a celebration of creativity, culture, and expression, while reinforcing the University’s dedication to building talent, inspiring minds, and enriching community through the arts.
