In a groundbreaking move aimed at revolutionizing healthcare education and addressing the pressing global health challenges, Thomas Adewumi University, Nigeria’s leading light in STEM-i education has unveiled its new and highly anticipated innovative Public Health Degree Programmes (BSc. Public Health and B. Environmental Health Science). This announcement followed the receipt of a letter by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Francisca Oladipo, from the National Universities Commission (NUC), communicating the approval to commence the programmes effective the 2023/2024 Academic Session. Also contained in the NUC’s letter is the approval to commence the Bachelor of Arts degree programme in English and Literary Studies. In a statement released by Professor Oladipo, she emphasized the significance of the new Health Science degree programmes, and highlighted their significance in equipping future public health leaders with the necessary skills and knowledge to tackle emerging health crises. "As healthcare continues to evolve, there is a growing demand for professionals who can navigate the complex intersections of science, technology, and healthcare delivery. Our Public Health and Environmental Health Science programmes have been designed to prepare the next generation of leaders who can tackle the pressing challenges in public healthcare, advance medical research, and improve patient outcomes.” According to the Professor of Computing, “each of the new Programmes offers a comprehensive curriculum that blends traditional public health disciplines with the latest advancements in technology, data analytics, and policy implementation. Students will have the opportunity to explore a diverse range of subjects, including epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental health, global health, health policy, and more.”
One of the standout features of the programmmes is their emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration. Students will work alongside experts from various fields, including medicine, engineering, social sciences, and computer science, fostering a holistic approach to public health problem-solving. By encouraging collaboration across disciplines, the programmes aim to produce well-rounded graduates capable of addressing complex health issues from multiple perspectives.
